It is one of the most common, and easiest to fix mistakes in golf.
When we are in great golf posture, our spine can freely rotate and we can make a good full turn back and through. Pick up some easy yards with better posture.

Hi guys, I’m Clay Ballard with Top Speed Golf.
Today we’re going to talk about how your posture can affect your shoulder turn and your power in your swing.
So let me go ahead and show you at address what I see a lot of times with people setting up.
A lot of times what will happen is they slouch and relax the shoulders.
That allows them to roll forward and you can see how I have a bend in my spine.
Very, very, it’s a comfortable position to be in, it’s a very relaxed position to be in, but it really causes problems when we’re trying to turn throughout in the backswing.
So if I’m in proper posture, my shoulders are going to feel like my chest if up, my shoulders are going to feel like they’re down and back, so I’m taking my shoulders putting them down and back.
My chin is nice and high, and from here my vertebrae are stacked on top of each other in not anatomical alignment.
That allows the vertebrae to rotate. So you can imagine, each vertebrae is stacked on top of each other, and they have a certain amount of rotation that they can do.
They’re going to have their full range of motion when they’re in that position.
Now if I get rounded forward here, you can see that now my vertebrae are going to be kind of crunched in on each other, and they’re not going to be allowed to rotate, and that’s really going to hurt the amount of rotation that I can have at the top of my swing.
So in this video, what we’re going to do is a simple drill that’s going to allow you to work through this, feel the proper positions, and then to be able to make a good, full shoulder turn as you’re going to the top of the backswing.
So let’s go ahead and get started with this drill, get in good posture, it’s really going to help you to be more powerful.
All right, so now let’s go ahead and get a couple drills in to really ingrain this and make it very easy.
So first we’re going to do, we’re simply going to roll our shoulders in a circular motion here.
So I want you to do this a few more times, really get comfortable with that, and then I want you to roll your shoulders down and back so that your chest is sticking out.
My chest is going to be nice and high, sticking out, and my chin is also going to be nice and high.
What this is going to do is it’s going to put me in good anatomical posture.
Now from here, all I’m going to do is simply take both of my hips, and I’m going to feel like I’m pulling them back to tilt my spine forward.
I’m going to do that until I feel a little bit of stretch in my legs, simply going to relax my knees, and then I’m going to let my arms hang.
So now I’m going to be in nice good posture, my vertebrae are going to be stacked on top of each other, and I’m really going to be able to rotate very, very easily.
Once I’ve done that, go ahead and get about 100 repetitions in, really focusing on that.
Then we’re going to do another 100 repetitions with the golf club taking it all the way to the top.
So I’m going to simply roll my shoulders down and back, chest nice and high, chin up.
Take my hips, I’m going to drop them back until I feel a little bit of stretch in my legs, relax the knees, and then I’m going to let my arms hang.
I’m going to finish it off, I’m going to get a little bit of spine tilt, and I’m going to be in great posture.
Now from here, I’m going to turn all the way to the top, make a good full backswing, and swing all the way through.
About 100 repetitions, as you can see I’m getting at least 90 degrees of shoulder turn.
I’ll do it one more time for you.
Go through the check points, relax the arms, spine tilt, all the way back and through.
That’s going to get you a good full turn, a lot of power.
You’re going to hit that ball really, really hard, and you’re going to feel relaxed doing it.
So good luck to you guys, get those drills in, and I’ll see you all soon.
