One of the most common questions I get is, how tightly should I grip the club when I’m chipping?
Very simply put, we want to grip the club as loosely as possible while still feeling like we have control of the golf club.
I want you to go ahead and stand up out of your chair if you’re watching this from your living room, grab a golf club, and do a couple drills for me.
Number one, I want you to go ahead and grab the club and I want you to squeeze it absolutely as tightly as you can.
I mean I want to see some oil coming out of the grip you’re going to squeeze this so tight.
I mean you’re going to use 100 percent of your force. Now try to make a few chip shots, or a few strokes here, and see if you can feel much of the head.
I mean I may be able to hit a couple decent chips doing this, but I cannot feel this club head at all, because in relationship to how tightly I’m squeezing, I’ve completely lost feel for the head all together.
Now let’s turn it around and do it the complete opposite of this. I want you now to flip the club upside down, and I want you to grip so loosely that you can now feel the weight of the grip.
So this grip doesn’t weigh a lot, but I’m going to grip so loosely and let my wrists kind of flow a little bit here, that I can really feel the mass and the weight on the end of this club.
So I’m getting very, very light. Go ahead and do this for about 20 to 30 seconds.
I want to be so light that I can perceive every bit of this club, and that’s going to make me have a lot better feel as I’m coming through.
So now we’re going to do this about 15-20 seconds, 30 seconds, somewhere around in there.
Then we’ll come back to the normal way, I’m going to go ahead and make a couple practice swings, and I’m going to pause at the end of my stroke and I want to have that exact same amount of grip pressure that very, very light tension as I’m holding my finish.
So I’m going to go ahead and do that about 100 times. Each time I’m going to pause for two or three seconds and really try to be as light as I can as I’m coming through there.
Once we’ve done that, now we’re ready to actually throw down some balls, hit some chip shots.
I’m going to do another 100 repetitions, and I’m going to make sure that every time that I finish, I’m holding my finish two to three seconds, and I’m feeling just how light my hands are.
Keep those light hands, you’re going to have way better control of the distances you’re going to hit your chip shots, and it’s going to make a lot easier to get up and down, start making more birdies when you’re by the par 5s in twos.
So good luck to you guys, work hard, and I’ll see you all soon.
