In this video, you’ll learn how pro golfers use the “Straight-Line Release”.
First, you’ll get a quick recap of what the Straight-Line Release is and why it’s important.
Essentially, the video explores where pro golfers fully release their clubs.
It’s measured by finding the spot where the club shaft angle splits the forearms.
With the pro swings, you’ll see many different types of wrist releases, and that’s OK.
For example, Ernie Els rolls his right hand almost completely over his left…
While guys like Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson release with their hands completely sideways.
So don’t worry if you don’t have the same release as one particular pro.
What really matters is that all the top pros release the club in a similar way, which is in front of the golf ball.
You should do this as well…
As you make contact with the ball, you want to have forward shaft lean and release the club fully well past impact.
In the Top Speed Golf System, I recommend swinging with a Straight-Line Release at 45 degrees.
That’s a baseline, so you don’t have to be exactly 45 degrees.
Towards the end of the video, you’ll see the Straight-Line Release of 12 top pros, including…
- Adam Scott
- Jason Day
- Sergio Garcia
- Phil Mickelson
- Rory McIlroy
- Tiger Woods
- Bubba Watson
- Greg Norman
- Ernie Els
- Fred Couples
- Jordan Spieth
- Jack Nicklaus

Hey guys, and welcome back. Great to have you hear today. In this video we’re going to take a look at pro golfers, a lot of different pro golfers, and talk about the Straight-Line Release, where are they releasing this club in their golf swing.
The way that we’re going to measure this, is we’re looking for the very first time the club shaft splits the forearms.
If I draw a line up the club shaft we can see here it’s favoring the left forearm. I’m going to wait until it splits right in between those, and then I’ll pause that video.
Now I can see, OK, that club shaft is splitting those forearms right around here somewhere.
One of the things when we look at all these pro’s swings, we may see a lot of different types of releases. So here with Ernie Els he’s hitting kind of a shorter iron.
Look how his right hand is rolled almost completely over his left hand. Nothing wrong with that at all. You may see others players like Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson, who have their hands turned completely sideways.
They’re going to be a very different style of release, but no matter who you’re looking at, you’re always going to see that that club head releases in front of the golf ball, and it releases on out here in front.
Even if we’re looking at here’s the ball at impact, we may see some players who release the club a little bit closer to the ball like that. We may see some players who release it a little farther away from the ball, so their club splits their forearms here, or here, or there.
We recommend 45° in the system, we give you a good baseline, something to shoot for, but you may see slight differences in the release, and that’s completely fine.
The main key is, is that we still have that club having some forward shaft lean as it’s coming into contact. We still have that club releasing out in front of the golf ball somewhere, 45° is what I’ve seen with most of the pro players, especially when we’re talking about driver.
Different irons, or different clubs, may be slightly different. That’s not really the key, we’re just looking to see when we look at all these pro players, are they releasing out in front.
We see such consistency of those all releasing the club out in front, we know that’s a big deal in the golf swing. If we’re struggling flipping the golf ball, flipping the golf club into the ball, we know that’s going to be a problem.
Check out these pro’s swings. If you’re struggling with this, I recommend two things. Obviously in the Top Speed Golf System we have an entire section on the Straight-Line Release, I recommend you guys watch that entire series, start working through those drills.
Also, we talk about in The Move getting this left wrist to bow or at least to be flat, and that helps you to get more forward shaft lean.
If you’re struggling with your forward shaft lean, get that left wrist a little bit more bowed like we talk about in The Move, I’ll give you the great drill like the Tennis Racket Drill there that is going to help you to do that.
Without further ado, let’s go ahead and check out these pro’s swings, let’s look at how they’re all releasing out in front. Best of luck to you guys.
