In this video, you’ll learn how pro golfers use the “Compression Line”.
First, you’ll get a quick recap of what the Compression Line is and why it’s important.
It refers to the line created at impact that runs through the center of the left ankle to the center of the left shoulder socket.
And this line should be tilted away slightly from the target.
For short irons, the Compression Line is more vertical than with longer clubs.
Note that with the pros, you’ll see that the left hip socket rests on this line.
They’re not bumping their hips out in front, which is a common issue among non pro players.
It’s really important for you to NOT bump your hips past the Compression Line because it can lead to unnecessary hip pain and possibly injury.
One thing you’ll notice among all pros is that their Compression Lines are similar…
The line goes through the center of the ankle, hip socket, and shoulder socket.
In the Top Speed Golf system, I stress the importance of this alignment since it’s a move that all pros share.
You can use a different grip, different takeaway, different backswing, etc.
But pay special attention to the moves that all pros have in their swings.
Towards the end of the video, you’ll see the Compression Lines of 13 top pros, including…
- Adam Scott
- Jason Day
- Sergio Garcia
- Phil Mickelson
- Arnold Palmer
- Rory McIlroy
- Tiger Woods
- Bubba Watson

Hey guys, great to have you here today. In this video we’re going to take a look at a lot of pros’ swings going through the compression line.
If we pause their swings at impact, and we were to draw a line from the center of the ankle up to the center of the shoulder socket, so not the lead part of the shoulder or the back part, right through the middle if you can imagine if we’re looking at an x-ray here, it would be the socket itself.
That’s going to give a straight line, and that should be tilted slightly away from the target. If we were going to draw a vertical line, we can se that this one is tilted slightly away.
Now for shorter irons, we may see a little bit more vertical like this. This is a 9 iron I believe, somewhere around in there, Ernie Els is hitting. We’re going to see this is more vertical line. For wedges, you may see it a little bit more stacked. As you get into driver, it’s slightly tilted away.
Another key that we’re going t see with all these pros, is that their hip socket is right on that line. When we see pros do this over, and over, and over again, we’re saying that’s a very important part of the swing.
There’s a lot of things that pros do differently. They have different grips, different setups, some setup open, some setup closed. Some the club is pointing at the right at the top of the swing, the left. Some of them have short swings, some of them have long swings.
All those are variables that you can do any of those and still play god golf. If we see them consistently doing this compression line the same, time and time again, that’s telling us how important that is to being positioning your body to be able to consistently hit the ball time and time again, day after day, week after week.
Check that out on all these pro videos. If you tend to struggle with this motion in your own swing, what recommend you do is start right from the beginning of The Compression Line Series, level 1 in the Top Speed Golf System.
Work through those drills, and once you get this down, you don’t have to worry about it the rest of your life. Once we really ingrain this, it’s going to be part of our swing and we’re going to have that consistency.
So work through those drills. Let’s take a look at these pro’s swings, let’s see how consistent their compression line is, and I’ll see you guys later.
