Clay Ballard: Now there’s two moves that I was lucky enough to be taught very early on, and I see most golfers get these wrong and causes them a whole world of trouble.
I’m going to walk you through exactly what to do to get your body rotating the right way, your body rotating on the right plane so you can get the club coming from the inside, from the slot.
You can get your posture to stay in posture, and you can get that right elbow to stay tucked in on the downswing no matter what day it is, if you think about it or not, it’s just going to come completely natural to you.
Let me walk you through this step-by-step, it’s going to be a blast because you’re going to go out and hit some really good shots.
Let’s go ahead and get started.
All right, so the first move is to talk about how to get the hips and the shoulders moving on the right plane or from the inside.
Now, what I see a lot of players doing, if I put this stick through my belt loops here, and let’s say this is completely level.
If I get tilted correctly, and I tilt my spine a little bit away from the target, that means my hips bump forward as upper body bumps back, that’s going to actually tilt my pelvis down a little bit.
My right knee may even have a little bit of bend at address to make sure that I have a little tilt to the right and now you can see this end of the stick is lower than this end of the stick.
As I go into my backswing, I’m going to kind of rotate on that plane. So imagine a plane of glass kind of going this way, I’m rotating around that plane of glass and making a really good turn to where I can come from the inside.
Now, when I get this little bit of tilt, the reason that’s so good is because it clears up all this space in here to come from the inside.
As I get that side lower, that allows me to drop my club in to swing from the inside, and to always hit a draw. If I’m coming over the top and I’m steep, this is the opposite of what you’re currently doing.
You may be doing this even if you’re a pretty good player. I know I did this for years. So we want to get a little bit of that tilt, so my hips go forward, my knee comes in a little bit, and then as I rotate back, I’m just going to rotate on that plane.
So I’m going to set up correctly with this slightly tilted. I’m going to rotate, this will obviously come up a little bit again, because that’s on that plane of glass.
So this side’s lower at address, this side’s lower at the top. All you really have to worry about, you don’t even have to think about that, just get this end of the stick to point a little bit lower at address, and you’re going to have it nailed.
From there, you rotate to the top. Then in the downswing, I want to make sure I get a little bit of a bump, a little bit of a weight shift to my left side.
If I stay back on my right side, look how this is going to be higher and I’m going to be coming over the top.
I want to feel like even as I get my weight shifting, that as I’m about down here, again, this side is lower. I’m coming with my right side, my trail side, lower than my left side.
That’s going to happen with every good golfer. You’re going to see as they come through contact, the same thing. That trail side or this right side is lower.
So really all you have to feel like you do is put this stick in your belt loops, start with it a little bit below. Go to the top of the swing, don’t even worry about where it’s pointing there, because you can’t even see it.
As you start down, have it a little bit lower there, too, so you’re coming from the inside. My club would actually hit this stick slightly if I do this correctly on these slow swings.
What don’t want to have happen, is I don’t want to get my hips going this way. I’m going to make my backswing, I’m going to bump my hips to the right, all of a sudden, this stick is level or even a little bit tilted up, and my first move down that stick stays high and I’m chopping down over the top.
That’s going to be the death move for a lot of players. So that’s going to be the first piece. Do a good 10 or 15 reps to get that stick pointing lower on the right.
Now the second move here is now that I have a little bit of tilt, I’m going to go ahead and feel like I can tuck my elbow into my right side. I’m going to teach you exactly what this feels like.
I want you to lose the club for one second, I want you to tuck your right elbow into your hip here. You notice how you almost have to bend down to get it into your hip, right above your belt loop there.
Right elbow’s in. My right wrist instead of being flat is going to be angled back. Now most people want to angle back the wrist like this, to where the club face is wide open.
You can see from the down the line view, that would be my normal set up. Most people want to get this club angled like this, and then the golf swing if I did that, I would have my elbow in but that club would be wide open.
That ball would be going a mile to the right. If I was going to hit one here, it would just shoot off that way into a big slice.
Instead of having the club angled back like this, I actually want you to have the club angled back like this. So now that face is actually level with the ground, or even better, would be slightly turned down.
So my wrist is like that. It’s kind of an awkward position, which is why most people never get in the right one, but I’ve got to put my elbow in, and I have to turn my hand to where now my club is back, but it’s also rotated down a little bit.
Like this face angle here, instead of it being open, which is very comfortable, that’s extremely comfortable, it’s actually going to be a little bit closed there.
Actually, regrip the club, get it position in a way until you can get it slightly closed like that. That’s the right arm position that you need to be in.
From there, all I’m going to do is rotate my body to contact. Notice how the face is square now, and not way open. This feels comfortable, but it’s just not any good. That ball’s going to go a mile to the right. You’re not going to have any fun playing golf.
This feels a little bit awkward, but the result is really good. So I’m going to feel that, a good 5 or 10 times. I’m going to tuck my elbow in, rotate that face closed, and then I’m just going to get in my posture and go to contact.
You’re going to see how your face is square, and you can do it a good 10 or 15 times. That’s a lot of that connection that everybody’s talking about.
That’s getting in the slot that everybody’s talking about. That’s squaring the face like everybody’s talking about. All that’s happening from that move.
So let me get this down now. I get a little bump, my stick would be lower here if I had that in my belt loops. As I come through contact, I’m keeping that stick lower through contact.
Elbows in, face is squared up, now I’m in that kind of power position that I want to be in, and I’m super connected all the way through there. If you do those two things, it’s pretty dag-gone hard to play golf, I’ll tell you that.
So let’s go ahead and try that out and you can see how at contact my right hip is going to be a little lower than my left hip, and that elbow’s going to be really nice and tucked in.
Let’s give it a whirl. There we go, hit that one great. Right down the middle of the fairway.
All right, so there’s one more piece to this. What a lot of players will do is they’ll get this position feeling really good like we just talked about there, and they try to just hold that on the whole way.
Well, the more you try to hold it, the more you end up throwing it. So as I try to hold, hold, hold, what ends up happening is I throw that club back here and I release some lag.
The reason is, there’s no way to create speed if I’m holding that angle. That angle that I just went over there, is a position that you move through and a feeling that you have just prior to contact. It’s an extremely important feeling.
The second piece of that is going ahead and letting that go. So I’ve got my tilt, I’ve got my elbow in, I’ve got my wrist down, everything’s in perfect position here to get me lined up to hitting a great, solid shot.
Then from there, I have to release that and let that fly away. You can see my club is pointing outside my hands, so if I have a triangle between my forearms and my shoulders and both forearms there, this triangle.
My club is in front of that. Once I’m here, I need to go ahead and let that go and that’s what’s going to allow this to feel effortless and fluid, and not forced or tight.
It’s going to feel really, really solid, really, really natural to you. That’s what I call the Straight Line Release. Once you get done with this video, feel those positions I got you into today.
Get that hip tilt, get that arm really in a great spot, and then let that thing go by working through the Straight Line Release in the Top Speed Golf System. Start at level one there.
It’s going to feel really good once you start going through these drills. So once you make it through level one, you get to level two, level three, all this is going to start to tie together.
If you can just do this one thing that we talked about here today. Get my body tilted correctly, and then get that club moving from here to here through contact, through the contact zone.
If you can do that extremely well, you’re going to play some dag-gone good golf. You’re really going to hit a lot of solid shots. So once you finish up here, head on over to the Straight Line Release.
Work through the levels there, and I promise you, in a very short period of time, you’re going to be happy with your ball striking. I’ll see you there.
