I’m Josh Eaton, Clay’s business partner with Top Speed Golf. Before I say anything else, I just want to say thank you so much for the incredible support and all the kinds words about both my golf swing and the website.
It’s been kind of overwhelming actually, Clay started off with some nice words, and you guys just piled on. I really appreciate it, so thank you.
The cool thing really is that the very first time Clay and I ever sat down to meet and talk about this business, he mentioned that he specifically wanted a community that was really positive, and supportive, and friendly. It looks like we’re reaching that goal already pretty quickly.
That’s all because of the great members, you guys chiming in and being so friendly and wonderful. Thank you so much for that, it really does mean a lot.
Why I’m actually doing this video is, in those comments there were also some really good questions. Rather than type areal long response that probably only a few people would see in the comments, I wanted to take just a few minutes to shoot a quick video.
I’ll warn you that this is going to be pretty informal, I’ve got some handy notes here that I took. This isn’t going to be one of those slick productions that Clay and our awesome video Race normally put together.
IF you aren’t into this, feel free to turn it off, you won’t hurt my feelings at all. But if you stick around to the end, then I’ll talk to you about something that might be kind of exciting that could come out after this, and we want some of your feedback on that to make sure it’s something that you would enjoy.
Without further ado, let me jump into a couple of these questions. The first one was from Howard B. who said, “Did you make any changes to your setup, looks like your hands were a little farther forward at address?”
That was an excellent catch, very good eye there. It looks like my hands are a little bit further forward. One reason I think, is I’ve got more spine tilt. I actually looked a little better at address than it did before.
Number two though, it was definitely a conscious thing. I didn’t ask Clay about this, so be careful running too far with this, but you know, based on what I know about the system, you kind of do anything in moderation as long as you hit the five keys.
So if you start doing this and screw one of the five fundamentals up of the Top Speed Golf System, maybe you want to back it off. But all did by moving my hands a little further ahead, is it takes some of the cup out of the wrist at address, the left wrist.
It’s a bit like a cheat, kind of a head start for when I’m making the move and bowing the wrist on the way down, I don’t have to do quite as much work when I do that.
The other cool part is, it helps me visualize impact a little bit more. Rather than having my hands even with the ball at address, if they’re just slightly ahead of the ball, it starts to make me kind of picture and feel what impact’s going to be like.
Even though my hands are going to be even further forward than that, it’s just a good way to get it started and have that kind of already burned into my mental image there.
Next question was from Bill P. and I think Clay already chimed in a little bit on this one, and he’s the better one to talk to about it, but Bill said he’s having success getting lag with the irons, but some trouble with the driver. Why is this?
I’ll just say that I feel your pain on this one, I’m in the same boat. I’ve had some good swings with the driver, and I’ll talk about that a little bit more in a second. Some real good swings with the driver, but it’s much more of work in progress tan the irons are.
The irons came fairly quick, it’s much more natural for some reason for me to do this with the irons. The swing really should be the same with the driver, I think it’s mainly a mental issue.
Like I said, I’ll talk a little bit more about that in this response to Mark S., Charles B., and Bob C., all asked some variation of how long did this take me, these improvements?
I’ve got to say this might surprise you, but it actually what you saw on the camera there, came surprisingly quickly. Literally, I don’t know that it took 15 minutes in the first session where Clay showed me the move principle, this new concept.
It kind of comes down to the fact that if you’re coming in to the impact zone, and you’ve got your wrist pretty well bowed, you can’t help but have a bunch of lag as you come into impact, and then if you let it go you have a really good release.
Tony G. hit on this in his comment, that if you do this one move it can kind of clear up a lot of stuff. Basically, you have a real good shot at nailing two of the five pieces of Clay’s system.
The lag, the Top Speed lag, as well as the straight line release, just kind of come naturally from doing this move. That’s what it’s just such a cool, amazing concept.
Keep in mind though, even though I did this in about 15 minutes, now the video you saw wasn’t that first session, but the first session of the video looks surprisingly similar to that. But there’s a big difference between that first session and this one in terms of balls striking.
So even though you can make something look really good on camera pretty quickly, especially with this move, the ball striking, it’s a big change in your swing still.
You’ve got to work on the timing a little bit, and there’s other parts of your body that kind of got to get used to where your hands are now. So just some things we’ve got to think of, so the actual ball striking and ball flight at impact wasn’t consistent from the start.
It only took a couple of range sessions which was pretty cool, for it to actually get pretty good though. I went out and played a really good round of golf very shortly after that. But I’m still working through that.
My irons are pretty consistent. Again, so what I’m seeing actually now is that with my irons, the shorter ones especially, my problem is no longer that I don’t have enough lag, it’s that I’m getting too much lag and a little too much forward shaft lean at impact.
It’s kind of hard when I’m practicing, hit a couple bad shots to remind myself, hey, you might have too much lag and you need to release it harder, just not something I’m used to.
Again, that’s a pro problem, and that’s kind of what Clay mentioned in the very first video about why he’s doing The Move and thought this was a good concept, because it gets you the pro problem.
Well my gosh, if I’ve got pro problems, I’m doing something right, and I think we all should be striving for that, it makes a lot of sense.
I don’t have a lot of pro problems, but I guess I’ve got one, and I’m happy to have it at this point.
Now what am I still working on? Like I said, so the irons are going pretty well, but I’m still working on a couple things.
Number one, and this is coming out I think in the next Move video, part of The Move is also shallowing your swing plane, it’s not just bowing your wrists, you shallow your plane. Clay has touched on that a little bit, and there’s a lot more coming on that one.
That’s not something I do naturally, I come a little bit steep into the ball. Not that bad, I don’t come way over the top normally, or anything like that. That’s one thing I’m working on, so that’s part of it.
The other thing is the drivers. As I mentioned earlier, for whatever reason, mentally I’m not the strongest I guess, I’ll readily admit I get in my head a little too much. I’ve made some good swings with the driver, in fact the very first session was kind of similar.
I had really good success with a few swings on camera, but it’s a real mental strain. I literally have to concentrate like 100 percent to do this well with the driver.
I’m just not strong enough, I’m not doing it, well, not yet. I’ve got to put a lot more work into that, but I’d say I’m probably halfway there.
It’s somewhere between where I used to be in terms of the lag, and what you’re seeing with the irons. I’m probably 50 percent there. It is better, I’m hitting it farther and more solidly, but I’m not where I need to be.
Here’s the thing though, where it leads me is once I kind of get there, and I’m fairly consistently hitting the five pieces of the Top Speed Golf System in my driver swing, that’s what I talked about earlier.
What we’re thinking we might have some exciting content coming, and want your thoughts on it is once I get this down a little bit better.
What if Clay and I got together and did a video series or course, several videos long at least, talking about all the things I worked on and changed from my original swing to the new swing?
Again, I’m getting fairly close there, but it would give you an insight into the things I’ve struggled with, the exact instruction he gave me, and I got from the videos, kind of my ups and downs, and being in my head a little bit.
A think a lot of us have those same things, we’re kind of bipolar in a golf sense. I think it’d do two things. Number one is obviously show again, how effective the Top Speed Golf System that Clay’s put together can be, and give some folks some inspiration, I think.
Number two, I’ve always thought it would be interesting, because we always get taught by instructors, people who have been really good players for a really long time.
I always think maybe they’ve kind of forgotten what it’s like to be an amateur that goes out and hacks it around at least once every few rounds out there.
This would be a little different perspective where we’d say, there’s a student that’s actually made the kind of progress that I’m hoping to make, and he’s been through it, and he’s not this naturally gifted guy who could have played on many tours after the first six months he picked up a club or anything.
So, might be a different perspective. Anyway, I want your thoughts on that. Let us know in the comments if you think that would be helpful to you or not, that you’d be interested in seeing some more of that.
I’m kind of excited, think it would be the kind of thing I’d be interested in. Let us know that if you would.
Also, if you’ve got a before and after improvement on video, or images that you’d like to show us, hey, contact us. Drop a comment, send us an email, let us know, we’d love to show you off on the website and get you in front of everybody else, kind of like Clay featured me there.
You’ll get a lot of support as you can see, it would be probably pretty cool boost to your confidence. That’s it for now, though.
Thanks for everything, and hey, maybe you’ll be seeing more of me in front of the camera before too long. Give us some feedback, and take care. Thanks.
