Q: Hey, Quentin Patterson here. And I'm really excited to share with you some awesome progress. Mike, an online swing review student of mine has made with his swing. So Mike came to me really struggling with consistency and he felt like he was putting a lot of effort into his swing, but he wasn't getting much speed or distance out of it.
So when I took a look at his swing, I noticed that he was coming up out of his posture. So I drew a line on his backside here. You can see this in the before video on the left. And what we're going to see is when I take him to the top of the swing, You're going to see how his hips move away from that line and move toward the golf ball and his body is really straightening out.
So when you do that in the backswing, inevitably you're going to do it in the downswing as well. And you can see how his body really straightens out as he's coming down. Now what you're also going to notice is how when he brings the club up to the top, he really flares out his right elbow here, right? So you can see how this elbow is really flaring out a lot.
Now this isn't always a problem. But in Mike's case, it's definitely something that we wanted to, um, get in a, in a better spot. Now, what a lot of people don't realize is that when you stand up out of your posture, that is a form of shallowing out the club. Now, it's not the way that the best players in the world do it, but it is a way that I see a lot of recreational golfers do it, right?
So we have to find other ways to shallow out the club and that's where that right elbow comes in. When that right elbow really flares out like that, it makes it more difficult to shallow out the club because you're going to tend to want to come down more steeply. So here's what I had Mike do. I had Mike do the chair drill where you place a chair behind you like this.
You can see this is the after swing on the right. You place this chair behind you. And the idea would be that you're going to maintain contact with that chair throughout the backswing and all the way into impact. As you come around to the full finish, you can disconnect from the chair. But when you go up to the top, you want to have your, your trail hip kind of touching the chair.
And when you come into impact, you want to have that, uh, that lead hip touching the chair. So as you can imagine, if he was doing that in his normal swing here on the left, he wouldn't be touching the chair at all. Right? And I also wanted him to combine this with, um, what I call the ball between the elbows drill.
And this is just a drill where we take like a small toy ball, and now they do make a training aid that you can purchase, but you can also just go to your local store that has like a toy section and you can get like a youth soccer ball or just like a toy ball, something around six inches in diameter will, will usually work.
And you can put that between your elbows. And what that does is it helps keep your elbows closer together and it keeps that right elbow for flare from flaring out. So if we take both the before and the after swing to the top of, uh, to the top, what we're going to see is a very, very different looking swing.
Right? So now you can see he's staying in his posture much better. He's much more flexed in his hips at the top. You see that elbow is more in and that club is in a, is in a good position. That's going to allow him to easily shallow out the club while also staying in his posture and the start of the downswing.
Now let me take you to this lead arm parallel position in the downswing. This is really where we're going to see the biggest difference. So if I take him to that lead arm parallel position in the before swing there, now we go to that same position in the after swing. Let's take him there. You can see how he's flexing his hips to stay in his posture in the start of the downswing.
Look at the position of that shaft, right? See where that, that right elbow is more in front of him instead of behind him. And that shaft is much more shallow. If we draw a line here, we can see it's now pointed outside the golf ball, whereas in the before swing that was pointed inside the golf ball. So when it's in that position, it's inside the golf ball like that.
The butt end of the club, if it's pointing in that direction, it's going to make it very difficult to be consistent because that club face is just going to be very, very difficult to control from there. Whereas if we're here, we have the club nice and shallow. Now we can use the natural momentum of the club to square up the face and it's going to be a lot easier to control things and be more consistent.
Not only that, you can see how he's able to now use his legs and leverage the ground. Look how he's doing, you know, what a lot of people call the squat move, right? He's flexing those hips, he's getting those knees a little bit more flexed as he's coming down. Look at how much more rotated he's coming down into the ball.
If we look in the after swing, you can see how he's kind of up on his toes. He's not really leveraging the ground very much. His hips are tucking under, that's going to be an all arms kind of swing. Now you can get some power from that, but you're not going to get as much power if you, uh, if you were to stay in your posture and leverage the ground.
So now all Mike really needs to do is drill this, put in the reps, make it second nature, get to where we can take away the chair. We can take away the ball between the elbows and we can have that same kind of motion. So if you're struggling with coming up out of your posture and you notice you have a really flaring right elbow or trail elbow at the top.
You know, putting these two together can really help, um, to get you on the right track. Now, you may be coming up out of your posture for a different reason, or you may have some other issues in your swing. And that's where we're here to help. So if you're watching this video on the day that, um, we're releasing it, it means that I've opened up spots for my online lessons.
If you're struggling with coming up out of your posture, you're struggling with shallowing out the club. I'm You're struggling with any part of your game, you know, uh, you know, the online lessons are not just limited to the full swing. We can work on chipping. We can work on putting a bunker shots, anything like that.
If you're having any kind of trouble, You can do the online lessons, um, and get, we can get that figured out. So, like I said, if you're watching this on the day that I'm releasing it, I've opened up spots today, you should be able to see a link, um, somewhere, most likely below the video where you can, um, click to grab a spot.
Now these spots do generally sell out fast. So make sure that you jump on a spot and then we can get working on things. If you happen to, uh, see there's no spots available. No worries. Just join the waiting list. So that way the next time that I open up spots for my online lessons, we can send you an email and you can sign up at that time.
Right? So hopefully you're playing great and have a good one.
