How do you stay down through the ball? This is a very common question I get. Now, I'm going to go through what you're maybe doing in your setup, the backswing and also the start of the downswing that may be causing you to stand up through the shot. Now, why would you even want to stay down through the shot in the first place?
Well, if we don't stay down through the ball, right my body is moving up away from the ball as I'm coming down in the contact, I really have to extend my arms down to the ball. And you can see when I do that, I'm really going to add a lot of loft to the shot and I'm going to lose a lot of compression.
I'm also going to tend to come in and hit the ball really, really thin. I'm not going to be able to get out of those really, really tough lies. So if I really want to be able to compress the ball and to be able to hit the ball of any lie, I really need to be able to stay down through the shot, get my hands in front, and really be able to divot off this club to give a lot of compression on that ball.
So what are we doing in the setup that may be causing you to do that? Well, first of all, one thing that I very commonly see is really having the hips pushed too much, too far back over the heels. So when I'm like this, I'm going to tend to stand up in the back swing and then if I'm too far on the toes, if I'm out here, I'm exaggerating.
But if I'm really too far out here, I'm going to tend to stand up through the back swing as well to stay in bounds. Right. Because if I if I kind of stayed in my posture and I how my toes I kind of fall on my face. Right? So really, it comes down to a balance issue at setup that could be causing you to stand up out of your posture to be able to stay in your balance.
Otherwise you may fall over. So what we want to do is have our hips nicely centered over our ankles right so if I would to draw a line straight up to my ankles here, I want to have that pretty close through the middle of my hips, want to have a little bit of flex on my knees and I want to bend at the waist and just let my arms kind of hang down and relax until they're roughly, you know, five or six inches in front of my legs.
Now, from there, I'm going to be in a nice, relaxed, athletic and balanced position. That's going to allow me to stay in my posture throughout the back swing and hopefully in the downswing as well. So now let's talk about the downswing and a great drill that you can do to help you to stay down through the ball. So what I'd recommend doing is finding a wall in your house, your garage, anywhere like that.
I don't have a wall that I can just makeshift bring out here. But I do have this contraption that I made here with an alignment stick going through it flagpole holder. You don't have to go through the trouble of making one of these, but this is going to help. This is basically going to be my wall and the demonstration of this drill.
So what I want you to do is get in your good setup like we just talked about where we're getting our hips nice and centered over the ankles there. We're bending at the hips, letting our arms hang down. Now, I want you to scoot up to where your head would just be touching the the stick or the wall that you'd be using in your house.
All right. And then from here, what we want to do is go up to the top of the swing and stay on that wall. Right. So a lot of times, if we're coming up out of our posture in the back swing, that's going to make us come out of our posture in the downswing. So we want to make sure that we're staying in our posture nicely in the back.
So when we look at our players, when they go up to the top of the swing, they're typically lowering a little bit as they go up to the top right. We want to be able to do the same thing. So if we can keep our head nice and steady and on this and not moving away from it in the back swing will be much more likely to be able to get into a good position in the downswing.
So I'm going to have this touching my head here. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to go up to the top and I'm going to retain that. Now, when I'm doing that, I'm really turning my hips and I want to get my triple hip higher than my left hip. You see, what makes me stand up out of my posture is my hips getting level and my shoulders getting level.
So I want to make sure that I have some good tilt to my hips, that my trail hip is higher than my lead hip, and that my trail shoulder is a lot higher than my lead shoulder. Right. So if I do that, I will be able to very easily keep my head on there. Now, if you find you're having a really hard time keeping your head on that as your as you're going up to the top, it's most likely one of those pieces.
So really focus on pushing that hip back and around. What you may want to do is flare this foot out, because if you're not flexible in your trail hip, it may be difficult for you to push that right hip, that trail hip higher than the lead hip. So flaring that foot out can be a big help for that.
So get up next to a wall here and then turn to the top. Keep on there. Retain your tilt here. You can see on my lead shoulder is a lot lower than my trail shoulder. Now, on the start of the downswing, what we want to do is we want to have our head move down the wall a little bit and still stay on the wall.
We don't want our head see when we come. If we even if we get into this great position at the top where we're where we're touching still, right? Even if we're in this great position, we can still move away from it. So this is just to help you. But if I'm like this, if I go up to the top and I'm like this, I'm going to have a really hard time getting back down to it.
So that's why we want to make sure, you know, what starts from the setup, right? Making sure we're in a good setup. Then we have a good back swing and then that sets up a good downswing so we can go up to the top here. And then we actually want to feel on the start of the downswing that our head moves down the wall a little bit.
All right. So my head's moving down the wall. I don't want my head to move down and away. All right. Because that's going to move my chest away. I'm going to extend my arms. I don't want to stay level and and not move down because I'm still going to extend my arm a little bit. Now, that would be better than moving away.
But I still want to move my head down the wall so that way I can have everything kind of moving down toward the ball in the correct way. So we're going to go up to the top here, head on the wall and then move our head down the wall as we're coming down. Now, when we're doing that, what's going to happen here is I'm going to flex in my knees, right?
So my knees are going to flex out over my toes. My hips are going to push back and my chest is going to push down. So like I'm kind of scrunching down into the ground. That's what I want to feel to get me to kind of move down to the ball. Now we can put all these pieces together, the good setup, getting our hips over our ankles here, letting our arms kind of relax down, go up to the top, hit on the wall, good tilts in my hips and my shoulders, and then I'm going to move down the wall by pushing my hips back, my chest down, my knees out over my toes.
And that's going to allow me to get into that really, really good impact position. So work on that drill. You can work out and at home, you can set up something like this at the course on the range to really help reinforce these motions. And it's really, really can help you stay down on the ball through contact Now, one thing that I didn't talk about here that's really, really important for staying in your posture and staying down through the ball is shallowing out the club.
That's probably one of the most important pieces. And honestly, if you're not shallowing out the club in the downswing, we really don't have much of incentive to stay in our posture because look, if I'm coming down steep and I stay, I keep my head on that wall and I stay in my posture. Well, look what happens to the club, right?
If I rotate properly, stay in my posture, I'm going to come over the top. I'm going to hit a big pole. I'm going to hit a big hook it's just not going to be it's not going to be a very good shot. So a lot of times a big reason outside of the setup right in and staying in our posture in the back swing outside of those two things, the biggest reason why I see people not staying in their posture, not staying down through the ball is from coming down steep.
Because if I come down steep well, look what happens. If I stand up out of it, that's going to shallow my shaft. And now I can I can swing from the inside. The problem is I really have to release the club early, extend my arms, and that's going to lead to an early release, adding a lot of loft, not getting that compression on the ball that I want.
So if I want to be incentivized to be able to stay in my posture in the start of the downswing, I got to get this club shallowing out so that way I can stay in my posture, rotate through the shot, get my hands in front. So before you even work on this stuff, where I want you to make sure that you're doing is that you're shallowing the club properly.
And the best way to do that is to work through our 20 minute shallowing fix course. So if you want, check out the shallowing fix course, all you have to do is click the instruction tab at the top of the screen, then click the Top Speed Golf System, then go to the 20 minute shallowing fix course. So awesome new course that we've just finished and just started putting out on the website.
Check it out if you haven't already, get that clip shallowing out, but don't stay in your posture very easily and play well. We'll talk to you soon.
