Why You Need This: We have all been there before.
You make a swing and you feel like you have no power.
You swing harder and harder and the ball just seems to go shorter.
So where is the power leak?
In this video, I go over the proper way to start the downswing and get more distance.
Let's get started....

I’ve got an awesome time for you today on how to start that downswing and get some great power. It’s what I call Turn-Step-Turn.
Here’s how we’re going to do this. One of the biggest problems that I see players, they’re losing power from the top.
As they go to the top of the swing, they open up their body right away, they kind of leave the club behind, and they really have nothing left.
So they’re starting to open up, come over the top, and cast this club, and they’re burning up all their power as they start the downswing.
If that sounds like that could be you, I have the perfect drill for you. I want you to go ahead and set up the golf ball just like you’re normally hitting your driver.
Now from here, I’m going to take my lead foot, my back foot is going to stay in the same position, but my lead foot is going to step back about six inches.
From there, I’m going to go ahead and back up a little bit so I’m just hitting a practice swing here, I won’t be hitting this golf ball.
I’m going to turn to the top of my backswing. So I’m going to the top of my backswing, what I’m really focusing on is if I have a logo on the back of my shirt, I’m going to be turning to where it’s facing the target.
So as I get to the top of the backswing, my back is turned to the target, and I want to take a step or a weight shift forward before I start my downswing.
I’m going to step forward, get my weight shifting forward there, while my back is still facing the target. Now from there, then I can go ahead and open up.
So what we’re training here is we’re training that weight shift to the left, then we can open as hard as we want to, because we have all this power saved up from our upper body.
Let’s go ahead and do this in full speed, the way I’d normally do it. Again, set up a little bit inside the golf ball.
My normal stance, move my front foot back six inches, turn to the top, step, my back is still toward the target, and then I’m coming all the way on through.
One more time in full speed’s going to look like this. Now I’m going to make it a fluid motion. There we go, I’m really keeping my back to the target. Waiting until my weight shifts forward, and then I’m going to hit the golf ball.
Give me 10 reps practicing this. You’re going to turn to the top, step, and then turn all the way on through.
Once we’ve done that, let’s try to recreate that same feeling in the golf swing. I have all this stored up power for my upper body, let’s see if we can get this one over 300 yards.
If you’re a member of the Top Speed Golf System, it’s really important to take the next step from here.
So in this video we talked about how to turn and then keep your weight shifting to the left while you’re still keeping your upper body back. Then you can rotate on through.
If we open that upper body too early, we’re going to have problems. But something happens before this. We have to make that good Power Turn or that good backswing shoulder rotation before we start to shift the weight.
If I make a half-hearted turn in the backswing, and my shoulders don’t turn very much, and then I shift, doesn’t really do me any good, because my shoulders are already open.
I can’t save up that power and get the logo of the shirt facing the target like we talked about. So go to the Power Turn section. I want you to start working through those drills.
The cool thing about this is even if you’re not very flexible, I have some great tricks in the Power Turn section that’s going to help you to get that full turn going back, at least 90° with the shoulders.
That all happens from properly using the hips and the lower body. Use the lower body properly, get those legs rotating correctly, and you’re going to be able to get that full turn no matter how inflexible you are.
So go ahead and start the Power Turn, build that muscle memory. Make it to where it’s automatic, and you’re going to have tons of speed, tons of power. I’ll see you guys in the Power Turn section.
