Hey guys, I’m Robin Rosado with Top Speed Golf. In today’s video we’re going to talk about the backswing, so let’s go ahead and get started.
All right, so today we’re going to get talking about the backswing. We’ve had a lot of people submit questions in, I get a lot of my students ask me, are there certain position we should be at the top of the golf swing?
In actuality, I had one of my students come in they said the same thing, it’s like, I’m really struggling with the top of my swing. I don’t know where I should be, should I leave it short? Should I be really long?
Should I be flat? Should I be whatever? Then what he was really struggling with was he had a lot of pros in the past tell him well short up your swing, because you’re going to hit it better.
It’s not wrong, it’s definitely true, if you have a short swing there’s a really good chance you’re going to be more consistent than having a really big, long swing.
If you look at his swing right now you’re going to see a couple things. One, you see this if a full swing with a 7 iron, and he’s only taking it to what I would consider waist high.
Also if you look at his first move of his downswing, he’s getting a little step. So he’s a pretty talk guy, he’s got a lot of room to hit the club further back and get a lot more speed, a lot more distance.
So those are two things that we really accomplished well for him. We accomplished speed/distance, and actually better ball striking because we got him to shallow the golf club a little bit more.
If we look here now, so in his swing if you watch me demonstrate it now, we’re going to notice that he got really short, so like I said by halfway back here, and his first move was steep on the way down.
The reason being was he was trying to create speed in a short period of time. He was only taking to halfway back, and then rushing on the way down with his arms and his hands, and that caused the club to get steep on the way down.
So our first thing was, is we needed to provide room for him to shallow the golf club on the way down. He wasn’t getting room to do so, so that’s the first thing that we did.
The first that you’re going to see here, is we did a test. If you look at this video, he’s actually on the wall here, and he’s seeing how far he can actually make a turn.
It’s going to be important for the turn because that turn going to provide room in the top for his hands to get to a position where we want to be.
If you look here, the stretch, and I’m going to try to demonstrate myself, when we’re turning back getting your normal golf stance that you would, you’re going to want to be about six inches away from the wall.
What you’re going to do is rotate around to where both your palms are on that wall. Now as you can see with his video, he was able to turn a whole bunch more. Way more than he even thought.
You’re going to try to go back to where both of your palms are facing on the wall. Your right hand or your trail hand is going to be higher than your lead hand.
Go as far back as you can, don’t try to over-do yourself, but I guarantee you’ll be pretty surprised how far you can go.
Some key points you want to look for when you’re doing this. One, of course your rotation, but the other one is you want to make sure your lead, so my left shoulder, see how much lower it is?
Again, what we’re trying to accomplish here is the room factor at the top of our golf swing. So by getting this big full turn and my left shoulder being lower than my right, you can see my right up has also gone kind of back and away, trying to feel like it’s hitting that wall behind me.
It gives me a lot more room around here for my hands and my arms, and that’s the second point there. Getting into position at the top so now we can create room on the way down to shallow the golf ball.
OK, so now that we just got your shoulder rotation checked, let’s just see how far you can take it. Remember the reason why we’re getting the bigger turn is so we can create more room.
Not just room for as far as how high our hands can get, but also room for speed, so he’s getting a lot of room here now.
Before he was here, so he has this little short period of time to get a lot of speed. Now we’re going to go higher so then we have a lot more time to generate a whole bunch more speed, but how do we get there?
We’re actually going to go to the halfway back position. Go ahead and get in your address position here.
The halfway back position, I like to say the general area is about halfway back my left arm is parallel to the ground, and I’ve create a nice 90° angle between my club shaft and my left arm.
Another checkpoint here, I want to say we want to make sure are hands are in line or in front of us, so aligned with my chest. Pretty much aligned with the sternum of my chest, or right past.
That’s halfway back. From here, I’ve pretty much set my wrists, that’s how I’ve created that 90° angle. Now what I’m going to do is get a little bit of turn with the shoulders, remember check yourself to see how far you can go just from that wall drill.
You can go way back here, great, but you notice here with my arms and my hands, I’ve kept the same angle in front of me with my chest, and all I’ve done is turn my shoulders.
I can see I have that same 90° angle, pretty much, at the top of my golf swing here. I haven’t done anything, just taking it back with my arms and my hands, haven’t tried to go flat, haven’t gone across the line.
I cut this same angle with my wrist, halfway back, and just got a little bit more turn with the shoulders.
So now you’re actually in a good position at the top of your golf swing. You’re not too flat, your club’s not coming across the line. Your hands are here, nice and high.
If you want to think of something here, maybe they’re in line with the back part of your neck. They’re higher than your head, but in line with the back part of your neck. So now you’re creating a lot of room.
So remember, if you go back to his video, he was a little bit short with his takeaway, maybe a little bit back here behind him, and because he was trying to generate speed in a short period of time, he was getting really steep on the way down.
Now you have all the room in the world at the top of your golf swing to then shallow the golf club on the way down, create lag, and in turn that’s going to get you a bunch of speed.
So what happened for him is that he was able to gain – even though it doesn’t look like much of a difference in his after video – he was still able to gain about 15 yards more distance just from a 7 iron.
Let’s actually get into the drill. I want you to do two practice swings. Go ahead and take your normal set up here, and I want you to take it to the top of the golf swing.
Go over it, check yourself halfway back here. Make sure that your hands are aligned with your chest. Nice 90° angle here, just a bit turn here, hands are nice and high at the top. I want you to go ahead and pause.
I want you to do two swings where you actually go ahead and pause at the top, and swing on through.
Now when you’re doing your practice swings, I don’t want you to actually look back at the top of your swing, because what’s happens there is your aligned on visually seeing that.
When you go to hit a golf ball, it’s not like you’re taking it back here. You want to gain that feeling, you can check yourself here, but when you go to the top of your swing, I want you to be looking down the golf ball.
In actuality, I actually want you to try and close your eyes. You’re going to do two swings here, pausing, and then two swings where you go more fluid and not pausing.
In those fluid ones I want you to close your eyes, because that gains you a whole bunch of feel of what’s happening in the golf swing, so then you’re ready to go hit a golf ball.
So for you members out there, remember the reason why we’re creating all this room at the top of the golf swing is to create speed and consistency in our backswing, but also it gives us room now to shallow the golf club on the way down.
That’s actually The Move section, so when we’re shallowing the golf club, we’re actually squaring up that club face, and we’re creating speed, and we’re creating more lag.
So it’s really important that you do do that. Go ahead and check out The Move section. Go through those videos, go through those drills, and now you’re really ready to hit some awesome golf shots.
