Why You Need This: In this video, you'll learn how to hit booming high drives.
Imagine you're on the tee box...
And for once, the wind is gusting with you!
Wouldn't it be nice to hit your drive higher and take advantage of the wind?
Heck yeah it would be nice!
As you'll see in the video, Top Speed Golf Instructor Michael Derr walks Co-Founder Clay Ballard through the key swing changes for hitting higher drives.
Here's are a few great tips to launch your drives higher...
First, set up with the ball more forward in your stance.
Just off the instep of your lead foot is fine.
Next, widen your stance about 2 to 4 inches.
This will help you increase your spine tilt for a higher launch angle.
Your compression line should be tilted back more than your normal drive.
As you make contact with the ball, you'll want a slightly higher angle of attack.

All right, nice swing. So guys in this video we’re going to talk about how we can take advantage of a downwind hole and launch the ball a little higher so we can ride that wind and really take full advantage of the elements when we’re out playing.
Clay just took a normal setup shot, just a normal driver swing. He actually hit it really well. He launched it at about 11.4°, and reached a max height of 134.3 feet.
So what we’re going to do is we’re going to make a few minor changes to his setup, and maybe just a slight change to the swing so we can get this ball to launch a little bit higher and take advantage of the wind.
Let’s go and get set up. We’re going to start with the ball position. We’re going to set the ball up slightly further up than normal, and then what we’re going to do from here, this should be maybe just a little bit off the instep of the foot.
Then the next thing we’re going to do is we’re just going to widen our stance a little bit. We’re going to simply take our back foot, just like Clay did there, about two to four inches back so we’re still lined up.
We’re not going to do anything crazy. Now this step back is going to actually give Clay a little bit more spine tilt.
In the stable fluid spine, we know we want about that anywhere 5° to 8° back, this is actually going to put us a little bit more, maybe anywhere from that 7° to 9° range, get us tilted back just a little bit more.
This is going to promote a little bit more of the upward trajectory at the swing so he doesn’t have to do much compensation to get this ball to launch a little bit higher.
We’ve got the ball up, got the stance a little bit wider, and now what we’re going to do, Clay let’s go ahead and go into contact and show them the compress line.
Whenever we’re getting into contact here, the compression line’s going to be actually tilted back a little bit more than it would on your standard shot. So we’re going to have a little bit more of an angle between the foot, the hip – the lead foot, the hip, and the shoulder at contact.
If we make sure that we hit all these keys, we’re going to have a really good chance to launch that ball up and solidly, and at a good angle so that we’re not popping it up, but we are letting it ride into the wind.
The last key we’re going to do here is we’re going to make sure we have a little bit of a positive attack on the ball. That means we’re having maybe a slight upward strike on the ball.
Not a flip, Clay go ahead and show them a flip. We don’t want to flip the club to get the club to go up, we want to let the natural setup take the club upwards, and we want to make sure when we’re swinging we’re thinking striking that ball a little bit up on the upswing.
Clay, let’s go ahead and set the ball up a little bit front, a little step back, little bit more stable fluid spine, and make sure you have a nice compression line leaning a little bit more than normal. Let’s go ahead and take a rip.
All right. All right, so you can see right there with just a couple minor adjustments to the setup and some minor adjustment to the swing, got a 16° launch angle and 157 feet in the air. Really, really good for those downwind holes.
Guys, go ahead and make those minor adjustments, and you’ll be crushing it every time.
