Why You Need This: In this video, you’ll learn how to hit consistently powerful golf shots.
TSG’s Robin Rosado will lead you through the Sumo Drill, which is great for improving your consistency.
So, if you feel like you’re wobbling around a bit and you struggle to swing with a solid base, then you’ll love this video.
The Sumo Drill
First, stand with a really wide, exaggerated stance.
You’ll feel similar to that of a baseball infielder getting ready with a wide, athletic stance.
Next, focus on a stable spine tilt away from the ball.
Maintain that spine angle as you swing.
Take a few rips with the sumo stance.
Feel the difference of having more stability in your swing.
Just keep in mind that this is an exaggerated drill designed to help you get the feeling of more stability.
Narrow your stance a little as you feel comfortable.
The goal is to avoid being too narrow in your stance which can cause you to make inconsistent swings.

Clay Ballard: Hey guys, welcome. Got an awesome drill for you. Our newest Top Speed Golf instructor Robin Rosado is going to lead us through the Sumo Stance Drill.
For those of you feel like you’re kind of wobbling around, maybe your head’s moving. You’re having a tough time with consistency, this is an awesome drill.
This is a drill that Robin came up with that I really like, and I’ve been using a little bit lately. Let’s go over the Sumo Stance, what do I need to do first?
Robin Rosado: Yeah, definitely. First thing you want to do is just get in an over exaggerated wide stance. You really want to feel the makes you really feel good and powerful stance. Wider than you normally would, obviously.
Clay: Almost like I’m a short stop and I’m ready here to catch the ball. I want to exaggerate it for this drill. I don’t want to go just a little bit wide, I really want to get there.
Robin: Yeah, exactly. It should feel really good for you athletes, nice, big, athletic stance.
Clay: That’s one of the things that’s been popular lately, is everyone wants to go to a narrower stance. I think if you guys at home are looking on the camera, does this look more athletic with the driver? Or does this look more athletic?
Robin: Exactly.
Clay: You look at Rory McIlroy, same thing. He’s got a big, wide, powerful stance. Not a big guy, but he’s ripping the driver. OK, so I’ve got my stance, what do I need to do from here?
Robin: Next thing I want to do is just focus on our stable spine tilt, away from the ball. Good, yes, so you have that wide stance, next part is tilt away from the ball.
We want to maintain this tilt as he takes it all the way back to the top of the swing, maintain that. Now he’s loaded up, feeling that strong loaded up into that right side like we want to do.
On the downswing, now he’s getting back to the ball again, feeling nice and strong. Now we’re getting into our compression line, our Top Speed compression line, we’ve got at the ball, nice and strong again.
Clay: At address here where my stance is so wide, I’m going to feel exaggerated like I’m almost a little behind the ball. As I go to the top of the swing, I’m going to feel the same thing, behind the ball. Then I come down, I’m going to feel behind the ball too. That’s going to help me to release kind of out in front. I definitely feel with this wider stance too, that’s nice and straight. I’m not going to let those hips kind of slide in front like I see people do.
Robin: Exactly, yeah.
Clay: Causes a lot of trouble.
Robin: Go ahead and rip one, take one out that nice, wide, Sumo Stance.
Clay: So I’m going about, this is my normal stance, I’m going to go a good six or eight inches wider than I normally would. Getting a little tilt away, and I’m going to stay tilted back the entire time. There we go.
Robin: Nice, perfect.
Clay: Nice drill, I like it.
Robin: All right, good deal.
Clay: Good luck to you guys, see you all soon.
