Hi guys, and welcome back to Top Speed Golf. In today’s video I’ve got a great video for beginners out there just wanting to learn the basic swing.
There’s thousands of hours of golf instruction all over the Internet, going into all these details, but if we want to build that simple, easy swing with great fundamentals that can boil down to just a few key moves, I’m going to get you started.
If you’re a complete beginner to intermediate player, this is going to be a great video t build it, and we’re going to do a progression starting from scratch, and building into the full swing, getting some nice power as we go through there. Let’s go ahead and get started.
OK, so as I mentioned, in today’s video we’re going to do a progression, a series of drills that’s going to start you from the beginning all the way to the end. We’re going to start without a club, we’re going to gradually incorporate that club. We’re going to get in hundreds of repetitions throughout this video.
This is a work-along video, so stand up out of your chair, go through these drills. You can do a lot of these in your living room. Then eventually we’re going to get out to the range and start hitting some shots.
To start out, let’s go ahead and lose the club and we’ll start working on the very first piece of the swing. We’re going to break this down into three different categories; one is a weight shift to the right and then to the left just like if you’re going to throw a baseball.
I’m going to first load up on my right side and then throw to the left. Same thing if I’m hitting a baseball, if I’m doing anything, a lot of sports where I’m swinging a stick, I’m going to have a transfer to my right side and then a transfer to my left as I’m coming on through.
That is very true with the golf swing. But it’s not as big of a transfer as a lot of people feel. Let’s go ahead and start out, we’re going to get your feet just about shoulder width apart, maybe just slightly wider than that.
Then I want you just to stand here with your arms across your shoulders, and all we’re going to do is make a little shift to the right so the weight is on the inside of my right foot.
If I grab my club here, I should be feeling like I’m putting pressure on the inside of my right foot. I don’t want to go so much that I let pressure go to the outside of my right foot, and you start to see the inside start to pop up off the ground there.
I don’t want to slide that far, that’s going to be a bit of a sway, I definitely don’t want to move around that much in the golf swing. I just want to transfer my weight to the right until it’s on the inside from the heel all the way to the ball of the foot on the right foot.
Then as I come on through, we’re going to transfer the weight all the way to the center of my left foot. You’ll see my right foot starts to come up off the ground as I do this.
Very, very simple drill. Small weight shift, little bit to the right, we’re not going to worry about any rotation or anything else. Then we’re going to go to the left. You see that my right foot starts to come up off the ground as I do this.
Go ahead and do about 100 repetitions of this, and practice inside of the right foot, center of the left foot. It’s really very little movement as you’re doing this. Also feel like you body is nice and level, you don’t want to be swaying this way or swaying back that way.
I’m going to be nice and level and just a little bit of a shift back and through. Inside of right, center of the left. Right foot starts to come up a little bit, again, I don’t want to do this where I really start to sway too far this way, and I don’t want to do this where I start to sway way over here. Just a small weight shift.
After you’ve done about 100 repetitions of this, we’re going to add to that some rotation. That’s where you’re really going to get your power. Your hips and your shoulders need to rotate back and then through in the golf swing if you’re going to get a lot of power.
Again, put your arms across your shoulders, and we’re going to make a little turn as we go to the inside of the right foot now. As we come on through, we’re going to make a turn coming on through.
As I come through, notice my hips are now facing out to the target, the direction I’m hitting the ball and so are my shoulders. My shoulders may even go a little bit past that.
Let me do that again. Little turn, making sure it’s just to the inside, little more shoulder turn, and then I’m coming on through.
Notice as I come up, my right toe is completely off the ground. So if I go this way, I’m going to a little bit of shift to the right, shift all the way on through and my right toe is going to come all the way up, straight up and down.
You’re going to do about another 100 repetitions of this, and you’re gradually going to get a bigger and bigger turn as you go back, and as you go through.
If you look at my hips they’re going to go about 45° on the way back, they’re going to come all the way on through pointing to the target.
If you look at my shoulders now, as I go back they’re going to go 90°, and they’re going to go all the way on through past 90° as I come through to the target there. About 100 repetitions of that, then we’re going to grab the club and we’re going to do the same thing.
So don’t be afraid to go slow with this. Don’t be afraid to sit down for an hour or a couple hours and really focus on these motions. That’s going to get the muscle memory for you. The more reps you can do, the better it’s going to be.
Now let’s go ahead and grab the club across our shoulders, and here I’m going to do the exact same thing I’ve been doing, except now I’m going to make sure this club gets all the way to where it would be pointing outside my right toe.
If I’m looking at my club, here’s where it starts. I’m going to rotate around until it’s pointing to the right of my right toe. We’ve got to make our hips move a little bit here as we’re doing this. If we don’t let our hips rotate, that’s not going to be possible.
Again, I’m going to grab this club. All the way outside the right toe, there big turn going back, going to have a lot of power from here. As I come on through, now the other side of the club instead of pointing to the camera is going to be past the camera up in the fairway.
All my weight is going to be on my left side as I’m doing this. For those of you who maybe have a little bit of trouble with the hips, maybe you’re not super flexible, it’s OK to turn out this front foot and open that up slightly so that as you rotate on through.
Now you’re going to be able to get some good speed as you’re coming through there, and really free up these hips, free up these shoulders. Really big key to make sure I get this club past the camera as I’m coming on through.
Another 100 repetitions doing that. That’s going to really get you a feel for how to move the body, how to load up and load on through. That you’re going to be way ahead of the game if you can learn these motions correctly.
Let me grab a book actually really quick, and we’ll go over the fourth and final piece, and then we’ll start to add the club and make a real swing.
OK, so for the fourth piece of this, we’re going to tackle one of the biggest misconceptions that there is in golf, especially for beginning players. I know I used to think this when I was first beginning. I know a lot of people do, and that’s that we want to keep the club moving square through the ball.
So we want this club moving straight back and straight through, and we’re going to fix this by using a book. Any book will work, and all we’re going to do is just grab this between our hands. I want you to imagine that there’s a swing plane, kind of an angle as you’re swinging back and through.
As I come back, you’ll see how my arms rotate to get this club on plane, or to get this book matching that plane. So as I go back, my hands are going to turn. It’s actually my forearms are going to rotate open as I’m going back, and closed as I’m going through to get that club or to get this book on plane.
If we’re looking from this direction, we can imagine that general swing plane. We won’t get into the exact details of what that is in this video, but we’re going to let those forearms rotate to get this book on plane as I go back, and then I’m going to rotate square, and then rotate as I’m coming on through to get it on plane going through.
I want you to do a good 100 repetitions of this. I would probably recommend doing more than 100 of the book drill, because a lot of people tend to want to do this and go square to square as opposed to let that open getting on plane and then following on through nice and to a good, full finish.
Once we’ve done 100 with this, now it’s time to add the club. We’re going to go through these same drill, these same progressions where we’re going to start to make a swing this time.
All right, so now that we’ve got our club we’re ready to start working with the club, making some real swings.
I’m going to go ahead and set up to an imaginary ball here, and I’m going to focus on these same pieces as I’m making little mini swings. I’m going to do about 20 to 30 reps per each piece.
So I’m first going to focus on a little shift to the right, shift back to the center and the left. I’m going to go ahead and make an easy, full swing, so about half speed. Shift to the right, shift all the way on through to the left.
I’m going to a good 20 to 30 reps without hitting a ball, just focusing on that. Then we’re going to go to the next piece which is going to be rotation.
I’m going to focus on getting my shoulders fully loaded like we worked on in the first drill, and then getting those to turn all the way on through as we come on through the shot.
Again, if you struggle with this, go back to the first drill, work on the body movements alone before you get to the swing.
Finally, I’m going to work on the book drill, letting those forearms open and close as I go back to get my club on plane as I’m going back and through. That’s going to allow me to be very consistent as I’m making my golf swing.
Once I’ve done, you know, about another 100 repetitions total swinging the club, if you’re feeling pretty confident with that, that’s when we can go ahead and we’ll start to hit some golf balls.
All right, now we’re actually ready to start hitting some golf balls while we’re doing this. By my calculations you should be about 500 reps in. It’s OK to spread that over a few days, really build that muscle memory, and remember the more correct reps you can get, the better of you’re going to be.
Now we’re going to break this down into three to one practice drill on the range. We’re going to focus on each of these pieces for one full practice swing, meaning my first one I’m going to focus on inside of my right foot, getting my weight to transfer to the right.
Then middle of my left foot as I’m coming on through, making sure those toes are straight up and down. That’s going to be one repetition.
The second repetition I’m going to work on a good shoulder turn and hip turn going back, and a good turn coming on through.
Then for the final repetition, I’m going to work on getting my arms and the club on plane as I’m coming back and through. Those are going to be our three reps. On the fourth rep, we’re going to go ahead and hit a golf ball.
We’re going to try to tie all this together, and then just recreate those same feelings as we’re actually hitting the ball.
There we go, felt pretty solid. Dead straight, didn’t curve probably a yard, and I felt like I hit that pretty well. So just tying those feelings in together, getting a good, full swing going back and through.
Developing that muscle memory of a great fundamentally strong swing. Work on that, work hard, and then we can get started a little bit more into the details in the future.
Good luck to you guys, I’ll see you all soon.
