Why You Need This: In this video, "How to Square the Club Face | Golf Lesson"...
You'll find out how each of these must work together for a square club face at impact:
- body motion
- hands
- arms
Whether you want to hit a fade, draw, or drive it down the middle...
You must learn how to square the club face for consistent, powerful contact.
Along with that, we want the club to do the work for us as well.
This is where we get extra speed from little changes.
Watch this video now for a trick on letting the club rotate open and closed to give it something extra...

Hi guys, and welcome back. In this video, we’re going to talk about something that a lot of golfers struggle with, and that’s how to release the golf club. I’m going to give you three keys; not only body motion, but hands and arms, and how those are all going to help you to release the club, get more speed, and ultimately get a lot more distance. Let’s go ahead and get started.
OK, so as we talk about in the Top Speed Golf System, as we release the club, we’re going to get the face to open on the way back, and then the face is going to close, square up with the ball, and then turn on over into our straight line release.
So if we’re going, let’s imagine I’m going sideways here, and I’m going to hit this golf ball. As I ge into my straight line release with my club about four feet in front, that’s the firs time my club is going to split my forearms.
You’ll also notice the face of the club has turned on over, it’s about 45° shut at this point. That’s allowing that club to kick through the ball and to add a little bit more speed to there.
If we were to hold off the release, let’s imagine I hit this golf ball and now I’m just holding off, my face stays square, square, square, the whole way through, I never let it turn over, I’m losing some club head speed.
As my face rotates, the toe is actually moving a little faster than the heel of the club. As that toe kicks on through, it can be moving as much as 20 miles an hour faster than the heel.
That’s about 8 miles an hour at the sweet spot, with a driver that can be as much as 24 yards of distance. We really want that club to release and kick on through, it’s also going to help to square up the face.
The first thing with that, if I want to get into my straight line release like we talk about in the system, I have a whole series of videos, three levels of videos, just on that.
We want to make sure that my body is in the right position to do so. I want to make sure that my spine, as I’m in the straight line release, is tilted away from the target, and I want to make sure that my left ankle, my left hip, and my left shoulder are all slightly tilted away.
You’re going to see this with all the best golfers. As they’re releasing the club, they’re going to be tilted slightly away, even though my weight is shifting to the left. That’s going to allow me to naturally release that club.
If I have my body coming more over the top, over the top golfers tend to come this way, the right shoulder gets high, everything’s driving through, and then as they’re coming through they’re more like this.
Well now I’m not tilted away. You can see my shoulder is much farther in front, and now I have to manipulate that with my hands. Very, very difficult to do, especially when you’re swinging over 100 miles an hour.
That’s the first piece of it. I’ve got to make sure that that angle between my left hip, left ankle, left shoulder is slightly away from the target as I’m releasing the club.
Now the second two pieces we’re going to talk about, once we get the right body angle, that’s going to set you up in a position to make this happen a lot more naturally. Now we’re going to add some speed to that with our arms, both upper arms and our wrists as we’re coming through.
As I’m making a swing here, as I go into the backswing my arms are going to be rotating to set the club on plane and to let the face open up.
So you’ll notice at address, here I am with the face square. As I go back, my club is going to be rotating open, and I as I get to the top of the swing, it’s going to be rotated so it stays nice and on plane.
What’s happening here is my upper arms are rotating just as if I’m turning a steering wheel to the right. My right arm is rotating open which would be clockwise, my left is rotating in the same direction, like I’m turning a steering while to the right.
That’s going to happen in your upper arm or your humerus. I want to visualize on this swing, that I’m letting my upper arms rotate open on the way back, and they’re going to rotate closed as I come through.
If I can do that, that’s going to get me a little bit of extra speed without really having to put out a lot more effort. I’m going to get the rotation of the club adding speed to my swing.
Let’s go ahead and try that out. Rotate open, rotate closed, I’m going to do a lot of swings doing that. I’m going to pair it up with my body position, and then we’ll go ahead and hit a few.
There we go, so we see that was dead straight, hit the ball pretty solid, arms rotated open coming back, and through coming in the downswing.
On top of that we really want to ramp up the speed, we also have our wrist rotating and releasing. So just like our upper arm rotated to the right, our wrists are going to rotate to the right, and then our wrists are going to rotate on through.
As you’re looking at my hands here, if I have my hands, the palm of my hands, as I come back you can see how those rotate palms open, and then as I come through, palms closed.
I’m going to put that on top of these other pieces, and your speed’s going to be really, really quick. That’s why you see some guys that are not very tall, not very strong, being able to create huge amounts of club head speed, because they’re maximizing the release of the club as they’re coming through.
Let’s go ahead and throw that last piece on there, the third piece, and we’ll hit one more shot.
There we go. Really hit that one well, that one was dead straight. I really felt like my arms were coming through there, my arms were snapping through the release to let that club head accelerate instead of holding off and slowing it down.
Work on those three pieces, get about 100 reps in focusing in on each one of those pieces individually. Do some slow-motion swings and pause between each one, just swing with the club, you can do that in your living room.
Then go ahead and do another 100 repetitions, pair it up with a golf ball, go out to the driving range, and you’re really going to feel the club whipping on through, and you’ll never struggle releasing the club again.
So good luck to you guys, I’ll see you all soon.
