How many times do you find yourself over one of these really important five or six-footers?
You’re down to the last couple holes of the match, you’re going to win the match if you make this, and all of a sudden, your hands get really jabby.
You block it out, you leave it short, and you hit right, you hit it left, it seems like it’s infinite problems. That’s all from those hands getting overactive.
You set over top of it, it feels like it’s just impossible for the hands not to kind of jab stroke at the ball.
Well how do we get that out of there? How do we feel a little more smooth, and we make our putting stroke more automatic?
I’ve got a trick to this, and if we’re focused on the hands it’s very easy for those hands to get tight and jittery. Very easy for your hands to move quickly in a lot of different directions.
One of the things that can smooth that out is by actually focusing on your back. One way that I like to do this is I like to focus on my shoulders.
So as I’m doing this putting stroke, you can imagine as my arms hang down from my body, as I rotate my shoulders back and through, that’s going to swing my arms.
My hands are going to be nice and soft and relaxed. They’re just going to kind of flow along with it. I really don’t have to do a lot to try to move the putter when my shoulders are moving back and forth correctly.
So what I like to think about, is when I set up to this putt, I’m going to feel like my right shoulder goes toward the center of my body. We’re always working everything toward the center.
When I’m doing my backstroke my right shoulder works toward the center as I rotate back. As I do my through stroke, my left shoulder works towards center on the way through.
By focusing on my back, it has a great way of taking my hands and arms out of the feel of that putt, and I feel much more consistent there.
I feel like even though this is a downhill, a little bit of a slider, as far as it could really get away from me speed wise, I feel pretty confident that I’m not going to jab that putt when I’m focusing on my back.
When you’re sitting over top of it, right shoulder back for the backstroke, left shoulder back for the through stroke. Now another couple tips that I see, I get questions on this.
What about my hands and arms? Do I want to lock those in and be tight? Definitely not. I want to be nice and loose with those, relaxed, but again when I take my focus away from those, they’re not going to get very shaky or very jittery.
They’re just going to go along for the ride and let my big muscles, the big parts of my body do the real work.
Then finally, the easiest way to stay smooth is to always hold that finish. When you focus on your left shoulder staying still, so again, here I’m going to putt this putt and now I’m going to hold my left shoulder.
I’m not worried about the putter, I’m not worried about my hands and arms, I’m just focusing on this left shoulder and keeping it still until the ball rolls all the way in the cup. You focus on those big muscles, you’re going to drain tons more putts.
You know we don’t really want to stop here. This is great to do this one drill, focus on your back, and you’re going to start to make your stroke better and better.
You’re going to make more putts under pressure, but how do we really ingrain a phenomenal stroke. So not only is your stroke smooth, but it’s also nice and even and symmetrical.
You’re making that nice groove stroke. You can hit it on the sweet spot every time. You can control your speed. How do you get all those things in there?
That’s where the Top Speed Golf Putting System comes in. So if you’re a member of Top Speed Golf, go to the Top Speed Golf System, go down to the Putting section.
Then as you work through those drills starting from the first video, working along through the system, it’s going to become easier and easier to make putts.
You’re going to have fun practicing, because every single day you go out you’re going to have a cool new drill to practice that doesn’t take very long, and you’re going to see more putts going into the cup.
So it’s all about sticking with the system. That’s the key to improvement. It’s not about doing one drill here, one drill there, it’s about sticking with a process, working through that, having a blast while you’re doing it.
That’s what’s going to make all the difference. I can’t wait to see you in the Top Speed Golf Putting System.
