Hey guys, great to have you here today. In this video we’re going to talk about when your driver gets out of whack.
Maybe you start swinging hard, you hit a couple good ones, you want to go after it, and it starts to go all over the place.
We start to slice some to the right, we’re hooking them to the left, we feel like we can’t find the fairway at all.
In this video we’re really not going to talk much about technique. We’re going to talk a lot about your feel, your rhythm, your timing, and getting the ball on the fairway. I’ve got a couple really good drills for this.
The first thing, and again, this is just a feel that we’re having. I want to feel like the club always stays in front of my body. A lot of times when I see players get really wild off the tee.
Rushing from the top, the club gets stuck way in behind, or flipping the club, or maybe we really feel like we’re trying to hit it hard, we’re an over the top player, and we’re very right side, and we get the club out here in front of us this way.
We could be coming at it a variety of different ways. We want to keep the club in front of us and our rhythm nice and smooth so that we can have some control with the driver.
In reality, if I turn o the top, if you look at my body at set up. Here’s my address position, if I stand straight up this is where my driver is at address.
At the top of my swing, my driver’s just lifting up over my right shoulder. At impact, it’s coming back down, and then the follow through it’s lifting over my left shoulder.
The driver really never goes, when we visualize it in our mind, we think about it in relationship to our sternum or our chest. We picture the driver doing a lot of this throughout the swing.
But if you look at as I go to the top, here’s my chest, here’s my right shoulder, and the driver’s over top of that.
As I swing through to the finish, I’m going from over my right shoulder. Because I’m turning my body, now my driver is over my left shoulder, and I’m just letting it relax at the end.
Feel some practice swings, I want you just to do 5 or 10 practice swings, felling like we keep this club in front of us.
A good way to do this, put the butt end of the club right into your belly button, rotate back as far as you can go, about to right here. Then feel like you lift the driver up.
As you come down to the impact, let your hips clear out of the way, but then I’m going to have that club sticking in my right side about right there. That’s where I’d be at impact, so again it’s still in front of my body.
As I follow through, I’m going to come on around, and I’m going to let it lift up over my left shoulder. So I’m constantly keeping that club in front of my body.
Once we’ve done 5 or 10 of those, let’s go ahead and try to feel like that club stays in front of our body the entire time, just nice and smooth.
Again, we’re not racing out in front of it, getting the club stuck in behind. We’re not trying to come over the top.
We’re just going ahead and letting that driver go over the right shoulder, over the left shoulder. We’re only swinging about 20 or 30 miles an hour.
Be really nice and easy. Working on your rhythm and your timing. Feel like your weight shifts to the right, your weight shifts to the left.
Again, we’re going to do the rhythm on these. We’re going to do about 15 or 20 of those to really get a good feel.
Now from there, the next thing I want to add to this, is I want you to feel your grip pressure. Keep your hands really nice and light on the grip, and let’s see how light we can hold these.
I’m feeling like my hands are barely holding on to the club as I go back. As I come through, I’m trying to keep the grip pressure as light as possible.
So in reality, we’re going to have some pressure in the grip. As we start to swing, as this clubs turns up, we’re putting a lot of pressure that way.
We talk about this in the Top Speed Golf System. PGA Tour player is putting about 100 to 110 pounds of upward pressure into the grip of the club.
Again, it’s not a technique video, we’re not saying exactly what’s going on, we’re talking about the feel to get some control of your game.
Once we’ve done those, now what I want you to do is let’s go ahead and make a swing. I’m going to pick out, you can probably see this blue flag right out in front.
Now you may not be able to see this on the camera, but there’s a couple telephone poles way out in the distance. I’m going to pretend like those are the right and left edge of the fairway.
I’m going to start out by hitting some little 50 or 60-yard drivers, full swing, maybe a tenth of the real speed. I’m going to try to hit it in that fairway, right toward that blue flag.
For me that flag’s only about 100 yards away, and I’m going to try to hit this driver right toward that flag. It rolled out, it’s headed right for it.
Again, it’s not about distance, we’re being super, super slow, super smooth. Now what you’ll find is, you’ll see how much you’re trying to rush, and put power into the swing, and do all these different things.
It’ll be very difficult for a lot of players to control this. Now I’m going to go a little farther, and again, I’m going all the way back. I’m going all the way through on these swings.
I’m just slowing down my tempo so that I really have to get control of the golf club. There we go, another one that rolled a little bit farther.
I’m going to go ahead and fast forward. We’re going to do this throughout 20 or 30 balls, each time going a little farther. If you get stuck and you miss the fairway, you have to stay at that distance so you can get it back in the fairway.
Let’s fast forward 5 or 10 balls, and kind of show you what this would look like. There we go, that probably flew 150 yards in the air, something like that. In the fairway again.
I’m going pretty good, and I’m going to gradually build up that speed. Once your done with about the 20th or 30th ball, you’re going to have a real good feel for your timing, your rhythm, you’re going to be hitting the ball pretty dag-gone straight.
There we go, down the right center of the fairway. Build up that rhythm, build up that timing, get that smooth tempo. You guys will be hitting it straighter.
