All right guys, I’ve got an awesome drill for you here today. This is a drill that Jordan Spieth uses as he’s warming up. I’m going to walk you through exactly what he does, and some things to focus on as you’re doing this.
Now we want to find a dead straight putt, so I’m going to roll a few balls from around the hole until I find one that doesn’t break at all. So if it’s breaking an inch right, an inch left, I’m finding that dead straight putt and I’m going to roll maybe 5 or 10 balls until I do that.
I want to be between 8 and 12 feet away, and what I see Jordan using this drill, that’s usually where the range that I see him in. The reason we want to be from that range is that that is close enough to where you can make a lot of putts, but far enough away to where you could miss a lot of putts.
So you can gain a lot of strokes on your competitors if you get really good from this range. So for example, if you’re from three feet away, and you’re the best putter in the world, you’re going to make something like 98 percent of your three-footers.
If you’re from three feet away and you’re a terrible putters, you’re still going to make almost 90 percent of your three-footers, just because they’re so close, everybody’s going to make 9 out of 10. So you’re really not picking up any strokes on your competitors.
Now from that 10-foot range, the best putters in the world when they’re putting really well are going to make about 70 percent from 10 feet. The worst putters in the world are going to make down closer to 20 percent, or the worst professional golfers in the world are going to make down close to 20 percent.
So you can pick up a lot of strokes from this range. How we’re going to do this, we set up this rod parallel with the target line.
So I found a dead straight putt here, you can see that this rod is pointing just outside the hole, that way when I putt down that line my ball’s going to end up in the center of the cup.
As I set up to this ball, a couple things that I want to work on here, a little pebble in the way. A couple things I want to work on here, is number one I want to get my feet, my knees, my hips, and my shoulders all lined up parallel with this stick.
So it’s going to get me in good alignment right from the bat. It’s also going to help me to tell if my face is opened or closed. I start to close this face or open the face I can tell really easily, because that parallel stick is there.
Then from here, I’m going to focus on my weight distribution. So I’m going to put a little pressure on my right foot, into my left foot, and I’m going to kind of move back and forth until I feel 50/50 weight distribution in my feet.
Then from there, I’m going to stay absolutely as stable as possible, and I’m going to roll some of these putts without feeling any weight shift at all. Also want to die that ball into the cup.
So we’re going to keep doing this, until you make about 20 putts. It’s a great drill to start out with at the beginning of the round.
Find that straight putt, all the pros are finding these straight putts first, getting in the grove from there. Then you can move on to breaking putts.
So make 20, they don’t have to be in a row. If you can do 20 in a row from 10 feet, that’s fantastic, that’s pro caliber right that. But they don’t have to be in a row, do 20 in a row, you’ll be able to mark this drill complete.
Work on the Jordan Spieth putting drill, best putter in the world right now, and you can be too if you work on the right things.
