G060. Why You DON’T Want the Face Square Through the Impact Zone

In this video, you’ll discover why you don’t want the face square through the impact zone.

How fast your club face should release through the impact zone is a controversial subject.

Some teaching pros say that you need to turn your wrists over quickly through the impact zone and others recommend that you should keep your wrists more stable in an effort to keep your clubface square through the impact zone.

Who’s right?

That’s the question we explore in this video.

First, you’ll see a demonstration of a more square release.

Essentially, a square release has less handle twist velocity, a fancy term for the amount of shaft twist you have.

Zach Johnson is a good example of a pro player that has a more square release.

Then you’ll get a demonstration of a roll release.

Tiger Woods and Adam Scott are great examples of players with this release style.

No matter how you release the club, note that you don’t want to try to hold the clubface square all the way through the impact zone.

Doing so will likely cause you to lose a ton of distance.

#1 Shallow Out the Club

This is important.

You don’t want to perform this drill and ingrain your swing with a steep club path.

So make sure you check your path.

#2 Don’t Forget Your Lower Body

It’s easy to perform the pump drill with just your arms.

The problem is that if you don’t use your lower body, you’ll mess up your sequencing.

Engage your legs and rotate your hips open while practicing the pump drill.

#3 Put it All Together

Pump your lag twice while engaging your lower body…

Then on the 3rd pump, swing through and make contact with the ball.

G056. Strengthen Your Mental Game! Make Practice Count

In this video, you’ll get great tips to strengthen your mental game on the practice range.

I’m sure you noticed people on the range step up and beat ball after ball and spray the suckers every which way…

Hook, slice, topping the ball, hitting it thin, etc.

Don’t be that guy.

Beating thousands of golf balls just for the heck of it isn’t the best way to train.

Instead, focus on a part of the swing that you’re trying to improve and always have a target.

Here’s how I start off at the range.

I’ll hit some short wedge shots 50 to 60 yards at a flag on the range.

Once I can nail these shots close, then I’ll move on to a 100 yard shot, then longer and longer as I go through my irons.

Again, each shot has a purpose. Don’t just whack balls randomly.

Also focus on a part of the swing that you’re working on.

For example, if you’re struggling with a bad slice, focus on bringing your club on a more in-to-out path, but still aim for a flag or another target.

G055. How to Stop Getting Too Steep | Right Arm in Drill

In this video, you’ll learn how to stop getting too steep in the downswing.

It starts with your right arm.

A common fault that I see a lot of players make is when they protrude the right arm too much from the body at address.

Doing that tends to alter your spine angle at address and also contributes to coming out of your posture.

And worst of all, it can cause you to swing the club on a horrible path with a really steep downswing.

To fix this, concentrate on having your right elbow pointed behind your body at address.

Don’t jam your elbow into your body, but make sure your right arm isn’t rotated in such a way that has your elbow pointed out in front of you.

There are 4 main checkpoints…

#1: Left Arm in Front of Body

In your takeaway and backswing, make sure your left arm doesn’t get stuck behind your body.

Keeping your arms and shoulders in front of your chest will help you make a mover vertical move with your club path.

#2: Take the Club High

As you transition to the top of your swing, raise your left arm vertically.

Tour players such as Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson perform this move incredibly well (you’ll see clips of them in this video).

Taking the club high helps you get a big, full swing as you rotate your shoulders back and start the downswing.

#3: Shallow the Club Path in the Downswing

As you start the downswing, shallow out your club path.

In the Top Speed Golf System, we refer to this as The Move.

This oft overlooked swing move is crucial for your clubhead speed.

#4: Don’t Forget About Your Hips

For a powerful swing, you need to rotate your hips open in the downswing.

Opening your hips will help free up your arms to whip through contact and into your follow through.
