Clay Ballard: All great ball strikers, all great iron players do a few things really well.
You’ll notice that when they start their downswing, their weight shifts first, their body starts to open up, and this club lags behind. I get a great angle of lag, and I have that late hit through the golf ball.
You’ll also notice from looking down the line that their club doesn’t go steep and they don’t stand up and flip. That club shallows out.
Well I’m going to show you some really simple drills. You follow these, and you’re going to get those exact same feelings in your swing.
Let’s go ahead and get started.
All right, so I absolutely love this drill. You take two alignment sticks, you follow the progression I’m about to teach you, and it’s going to get your body opening first and that club still lagging behind.
So the body opens up, my club back here lags behind, and then it’s going to have that late hit, lots of lag, lots of forward shaft lean. Well, there’s a way to do this.
So I’m going to take one stick in my left hand, grip it at the end. The other stick in my right hand, ideally they’d both be the same length, these are the ones I had with me, doesn’t really make too much difference.
I’m going to get in my golf posture here, and what I’m going to do is I’m going to turn to the top. I’m going to let my body open up first, I’m going to feel very tight and connected with my left arm into my left arm pit.
So I feel like if I had a glove or something under here it would be cinched in. I don’t want to stick a glove under there, because it will come a little bit loose at the top and it would fall out. That’s fine.
But as I start down, as my body opens up, I want to feel my left arm tight. Then this club is going to swish on through while this club lags behind. I don’t want that right hand to hit first.
If you feel like you’re doing this in your swing and that right hand’s throwing first, what’s going to end up happening with these sticks is as you go to the top, this stick is going to cross, my right hand is going to cross my left hand, and I’m going to get all messed up here.
So I want to feel like I rotate through the top, I simply open my body. My left arm swishes through first. This right hand is lagging behind, it’s shallowing out from the inside, and it swishes through second.
So it’s going to look something like this if I do this correctly. Just like that. Two swishes, and I really get that synched up.
Now what you’ll notice with most players is you’re going to feel like you do this. You go from the top, that right hand throws and it starts to steepen the club up.
You see the right hand is the one that forces the club to get steep. When I’m very right-hand dominant and I’m trying to push this club early, that’s why I lose that lag and that gets that club out here.
So doing this two arm drill what you’ll notice is you don’t have much trouble getting that left arm from the inside. The trouble comes in from that right hand getting inside.
As you go to the top, really feel like that right hand does this. It shallows out, it stays back, and it waits for the hit.
So if I do it wrong, I’m going to do that and my sticks are going to hit, it’s all out of whack. If I do it right, shallowing out the club with my right hand, and then I’m letting both of those one-two come right on through there.
Takes a little bit of practice, a little bit of timing, but once you get that down, man, it feels just like a great swing. It has that really late hit with the right hand.
Now, the second piece of this that goes right along with that, when I’m letting that left arm swing down first it’s having that first woosh.
In order to do that well, I have to get my left foot and my weight or my weight going into my left foot early. So if I put a tee under my left ankle, so if this is the tee here, I’m going to sit that where it would just be under my left ankle.
I really don’t have to have any feeling there, I won’t be able to necessarily feel this tee, but it’s just a sensation or an idea that I want to have.
So I want to feel like, in my mind, as I go to the top, I drive that left tee into the ground. I’m taking my heel and pushing that into the ground.
That’s going to get my weight shifting left. That’s going to get my body opening up while this club is still back here. Then I’m going to swing on through.
So you’ll notice in the swing, my weight starts to go a little left first, I’m driving that tee into the ground, then I’m going to have the two swishes from the club.
It’s pressure left, swish, swish. Pressure left before I start my downswing, and then swish, swish with both arms.
If I was doing it with those alignment sticks again, that’s exactly how it would go. When I’m doing it with the club now, I’m pressure left and then swing down.
There we go, so we could see my weight got left, then I came down through the shot.
Now the third piece is one that I really, really like. What I’m going to do here is I’m going to grab that alignment stick again, and I’m going to work on having that ball stick to the face for a very long time.
I’m going to grab a golf ball. I’m going to set it up just like I was hitting it here. Then I’m going to put that stick out in front, about a foot in front of my golf ball, about a foot outside my golf ball.
Kind of representing my swing plane, so I want it to be at a little bit of an angle here, just kind of parallel to the direction I would be swinging this club.
Doesn’t have to be exact, this angle doesn’t matter if it’s a little flat or a little upright, you just want it to be out of the way so you won’t be hitting it.
Then what I’m going to do, it needs to be nowhere near where you’re going to hit it.
Then what I’m going to do, is I’m going to set up to this golf ball, and I’m going to make sure that I have a lot of forward shaft lean, and I have a late hit in the golf ball.
Again, if I’m letting that right stick lag behind, I’m keeping lag, I’m going to have more forward shaft lean on this golf ball, and I’m going to have that late hit. I love the idea of what Trevino would say.
He feels like the ball is stuck to the face all the way through the impact zone, all the way through here. Those arms go really long as you’re doing that, and you almost have to shake the ball off the club face, because it’s sticking to it so well.
That’s kind of a cool sensation, a cool feeling to have, and this little drill here is going to help you to do that.
So again, if I was feeling like I get my weight left, my left arm swings down. You’ll see how much forward shaft lean I have here.
My right arm is lagging back behind from the inside. If I do that, you’ll see how much forward shaft lean I have. The first time I want my club to be perpendicular to the ground is well out here in front.
So you’ll see how my left arm has to bow quite a bit, my left wrist. My right wrist still has some angle in it. I’m going to feel like I have tons of lean, I’m sticking that club to the ball for a good foot after impact.
If I do that right, my shaft is going to match this when I get to this club here. It’s just a reference point, it should be nowhere again, you don’t want to get that to where somewhere you’d hit it. Should be nowhere near where you’re actually swinging the club.
If I do this wrong, I throw at the golf ball, remember my right hand throws early, I’m going to flip and as I get up here my hands get to the stick, my club’s going to be way out here somewhere.
It wants to be forward shaft lean, perpendicular to the ground, and then long arms extending away from the golf ball.
So let me go ahead and try that out here with a lot of shaft lean, and I’m going to feel like I’m really lagging behind with that right arm. Let’s give it a whirl.
There we go, really well compressed. Dead straight, can’t hit it a whole heck of a lot better than that.
Now in this video we got started with creating some great lag. That late hit with the right arm, it’s kind of saving it up, the body’s turning first, then the right side is hitting. So it’s left side, right side.
But if you want to ingrain this forever, we can’t just do this one video. This is going to get you started on it, it’s going to help you get down the road of having tons more lag, having that great compression and that ball just sticking to the face all the way through impact.
But if you want to have that for the rest of your life, you want to just roll up, walk out of your car, go to the first tee, not even warm up at the driving range and have your swing do that, we need to work through a progression or a system to make sure it sticks forever.
Go to the Top Speed Golf System by clicking the Instruction tab, click on the Top Speed Golf System, and then work your way through The Lag section there.
You start working through those levels, it’s going to become really natural. We’re going to build on what we talked about here so that whenever you swing a club, you’re going to feel like you get a ton of angle here, and a lot of compression on that golf ball.
You’ll feel like you really don’t even have to try to do it. The only way to get that is by working through that system, doing each of the drills, and making it completely natural.
So do these drills here today, get started, start compressing the heck out of the ball and then ingrain it for a lifetime by working through The Lag section of the Top Speed Golf System.
I can’t wait to see you there, show you some of the other secrets that I have that are going to make lag really easy. Let’s go ahead and get started.
